British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels down to the depot... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were thousands of British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
